Char Vinar, Author, Filmmaker, TEW President

Char Vinar, President of the Triangle East Writers, has been writing literally all of her life.  At age seven, she wrote and drew pictures in a small notebook of a story about a mouse called Little Mouse, that she would read to her cat.  At 11, she wrote a Christmas play for her sixth grade class called “The Magic Christmas Elf”, which they performed. By 14, she had become a professional writer and was paid for her work published in a national teen magazine, the sum of $148.78. She thought she was rich.

Since that time, if it has ever needed words, she has written it at one time or another, including political speeches, magazine and newspaper articles and features, op-eds, advertising copy, product jingles, lyrics for love songs for weddings, TV and radio scripts, newsletters, children’s stories, mystery, thrillers, romance and sci-fi fantasy, as well as profiles for singles websites and copy for dozens of web pages for friends. The list goes on.

Two pieces she is particularly proud of are the instruction manual she wrote for a tractor that she didn’t receive a by-line for and a thesis she wrote in a college Ethics class, for which she received an A+, that was entirely a lie.

Known for her collection of red shoes and to her friends and the writing world as the Badass Warrior Queen of the Red Shoe Nation, Char has traveled extensively and lived in Europe and Mexico for a time, as well as in 13 states in the US. She is a veteran, having served in the Navy, as well as having been a Marine Corps wife, a Marine Corps mother and now, a Marine Corps grandmother.

Her first actual children’s book, a collaboration with her younger brother, cartoonist and illustrator Jeremy Vinar, is Ignis, The Mighty Dragon!, which will launch in the summer of 2024.

She has also written a screenplay and then filmed the short movie called, Black Honey, which will premier in the fall of 2024.

The book that the movie is based on, Badass Warrior Queen, a Life of Courage, Resilience and Humor, is expected to launch around the same time as the movie premier.

She is currently working on a series of paranormal romance adventures based on her Scottish heritage. When not writing, she spends her time cooking for her writer friends, indulging her quest for the most perfect tacos in the state, creating magical décor for various friends and different events, playing in the dirt - aka gardening, being a photographer, going to flea markets and farmer’s markets, watching classic movies from the ‘30s and ‘40s, walking on the beach and taking leisurely treks in the mountains.
